The yee sang here is pretty tasty.

Could finally lou sang here because there were enough of people!
Unlike the last time, we only had 4 people, so we couldn't lou sang CLICK.

We ordered a suckling pig.

The price of the whole pig
stated on the website is RM170.
I pre-ordered the pig
and I didn't counter check the price published on its menu
(not sure what was the published price)
because apparently, they charged us RM250 for this pig
stating that the price on its website is outdated.

RM250 is super expensive . . .
had we known, we would have prolly picked Ming Room instead
bcoz the suckling pig is supposedly much cheaper (according to my colleague).

We ordered Peking duck pancakes.

The remaining duck meat was fried with black pepper.

Kai Lan

We also ordered the brinjal + Hokkien Mee
and were crazy stuffed after the meal.

My colleagues mentioned that the Hokkien Mee
had no wok hei to it
which was the same comment
my friends gave when they had the Hokkien Mee there.

Service was pretty bad and slow though.

The Kai Lan came out the last
and was cold when it arrived.
We were actually hoping that the Kai Lan was 'forgotten'
because it took so long to be served
and we were stuffed by the time
it arrived.

Things to do in Hong Kong

Just by looking at the pictures in this post,
clearly, the bulk of 'things to do' in Hong Kong
revolves around PIGGING OUT!

There's also SHOPPING to do in HK
but the only thing worth shopping (in my opinion)
is cosmetics, facial mask & bath products
because it's about 10-20% cheaper than KL.

If you're talking about bags or clothes . . .
ever since I've been to UK/Europe,
everything else seems expensive
in comparison.

Anyway, back to the topic on 'things to do', below are some 'touristy' / "must do" things in HK :

1) EAT dim sum.

Not eating dim sum in HK is like not drinking tom yum soup in Thailand, not eating pasta in Italy, not eating sushi in Japan! You should get my drift . . .

We went to Tim Ho Wan AGAIN (ze famous one Michelin star dim sum restaurant in HK).
CLICK for an older post I wrote on Tim Ho Wan.

This time around, the dim sum didn't taste as good as before.
Only thing I enjoyed there was the famous char siew pau - cripsy on the outside, soft on the inside. Apparently, the star chef has left?

2) Hui Lau Shan

Nice mango desserts served in miniscule portions.
Wanted to go there a second time during my trip but didn't have enough stomach space.

Between choosing mango dessert and steamed milk to fill my tummy, I'm more inclined to the latter.

3. Australian Dairy Company

Wouldn't recommend the pasta served in chicken broth here.
Pasta doesn't taste as good as instant noodles in chicken broth.

I had like 3 bowls of this (not in one go lah) while I was in HK.
2 bowls @ The Australian Dairy Company!

If you are the type who can't stand the smell of milk,
this wouldn't be your cup of tea.

4. Avenue of Stars

They have a LIGHT show at 8 p.m. every night. The light show is pretty pretty.
When we went there, the place was packed with Mainland Chinese though.
If you wanna secure a 'good view' spot, I suggest that you head there early.

5. EGG tarts

The egg tarts in this pic is from Yung Kee. Surprisingly, I found it pretty hard to find egg tarts around HK.

I tried egg tarts from a normal bakery in HK and it was yums! Egg tarts in HK has this really creamy milky taste in the custard (which I love!)

6. Go to the Peak for nice cold weather and the nice view from above . . .

. . . and if you're lucky, you could get free samples of food at The Peak too!

I'm all about 'free goodies' and 'discounts' - I SO have an aunty side to me :P

7. Eat wan tan mee

I find wan tan mee here overrated though. Perhaps, it's just my personal preference - I prefer our KL dry wan tan mee with black sauce as opposed to soupy wan tan mee.

8. Eat roast goose @ Yung Kee (Heading to Yung Kee during each visit to HK seems to be a ritual for me).

Another popular item at Yung Kee which I discovered recently from a colleague is the century eggs. It's RM5 for HALF an egg. Super expensive!

It was good - the yolk is still wet and sticky, but for RM5 . . .

9. Drink tong sui

I really like the tong sui @ Cong Sau, just opposite Times Square. If you like yam, do order the yam and coconut tong sui!!

Cong Sau is located at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel entrance.

10. Eat porridge

This porridge place was recommended by my mum's friend.

It opens at 11 a.m. if I recall correctly. I can't remember the name but if you can read Mandarin, pls see sign board below. Just check out the number of articles/write ups on this shop posted at the entrance!

To get here, after exiting the Yau Ma Tei MRT exit, just walk straight and turn right at the first turning. It'll be on your right side.

My mum said that the fish stomach porridge is really good.
I had normal fish slices and beef porridge. The normal portion here is quite big.

11. Eat streetside curry fishballs

This tasted OK to me - just ate to try it out!

It's not surprising on why/how I gained so much weight over a span of 5 days in HK -_-"

Hong Kong Disneyland

HK Disneyland is my very FIRST time to Disneyland.
Sad, I know *sniffles*

Wish I had been here when I was 12
instead of 20-something.

I loved the performances, the parade and the fireworks!

A one day ticket costs about RM200.
A little pricey considering that fact that you will be unable to cover all the rides in the park and watch all of the shows in a day.

I really enjoyed The Lion King and the Golden Mickeys performance. *Love love love*
Wish that I had the time to take pictures with the Disney princesses though! :(

Disneyland is seriously the happiest place on earth.

Every character and performer was smiling 24/7
while doing their own happy dance during the parade.
For a moment, it looked as though
it was a Disney cult of some sort.

Modern China Restaurant, HK

Ate at this restaurant TWICE (the Times Square branch)
during my trip to HK.

We enjoyed our meals here -
it's Shanghainese cuisine.

On weekends, this place is packed.
Without a booking, you would probably
have to wait for at least one hour to be seated.

Appetizers - pretty decent size crispy prawns

Another appetizer - some cucumber.

The yee sang served was kinda different - it consists of noodles with shredded chicken, egg, shrimp, carrots, vege, etc. to toss.

This was my first lou sang of the year.

Cold sliced pork - this was really good.

The dumplings were also good - texture and taste wise.
The skin thickness was just right.

I don't usually eat pork fat but
I popped a piece of the braised pork in my mouth
(together with the pork fat)
and it was super good!

Some mushroom and bamboo dish - tasted normal to me.

Rose flavoured braised spare ribs.

It really came with tiny roses! Can you see it in the pic?
This tasted kinda unusual.
Something different -
it really does taste like ROSES!

The portion is super small though
and the ribs were skinny.

I'm not sure of the name of this noodles on the menu
but this simple bowl of noodles
is really tasty.

Has a peanut + sesame oil soup base with minced pork.
We ordered a bowl to share among us
just so that we could try a little bit of everything.

Would recommend you to try this noodles!

Ordinary fried beans.

Deep fried duck. If you like bebek, you'll enjoy this dish.

Tastes exactly like bebek to me
just that it has a hint of chinese spices.

Ordinary fried noodles.

Deep fried souffle ball with mashed red bean

Tasted somewhat like ham chin pang just that
our KL ham chin pang (red bean bun) is 10 times better.

The red bean in this souffle ball was pretty scarce
(it was pretty hollow in the middle.)
and it had a yeast taste to it.

Chong Fat Chiu Chow Restaurant , Kowloon

Can't recall the number of times I've eaten Teochew food before
but eating at Chong Fat Chiu Chow was
definitely a new experience for me -
my first time eating cold fish
and goose innards.

Slices of duck meat and duck liver

Goose intestines. Tried a piece and it was actually quite tasty.

Peppery pork soup laden with pork intestines.
Was really, really peppery but very syok to drink this on a cold night! :)

The cold fish was really good (when eaten with the sauce provided - I think it was some peanut sauce).

Supposedly one of its popular dishes - fish noodles (just strings of noodles made out of fish). Nothing really special to me. Tasted ordinary - like a long strand of fish paste.

I liked the fried tofu platter - comes with two different kinds of tofu.

One is plain tofu while the other one had bits and pieces of chopped radish in it (I think it's radish but I could be wrong. lol).

Fried oyster omelette (In my opinion, Penang's Oh Chien tastes better).

Not sure whether it's actually just purely flour coated or coated with egg + flour because I couldn't taste the egg.

Some steamed cabbage (Was too stuffed by the time this was served to even try this).

Oyster congee

The congee had bits of mince pork in the congee as well.
The broth was quite flavorful. If you like oysters, you'd probably enjoy this.

Ze best thing to end the meal - sugar coated taro!
This was so good! Must order this if you do eat there.

Was on an eating spree in HK over the past few days.
Eating spree and shopping spree (for facial masks -我的美麗日記).

Touched down HK at about 10 a.m. and was starving.
Had dim sum brunch @ The King's Cuisine
which serves a wide array of dim sum.

Apparently this place is SUPER packed
during the weekends.
Went there on a weekday so it wasn't too bad
(didn't have to wait)
but the crowd starting pouring in from 12 p.m. onwards.

compared to my MONKFISH (a chewy fish!).
It was my first time eating monkfish too.
I suppose it's an acquired taste.

Portions are decent as well.

And oh, my favourite macaron flavour @ Nathalie's is VANILLA.
Boring as the flavour may seemingly be . . . but I love it!

The Yellow Stall on the Street

Opposite Uncle Cheng's beef noodles in SS2 (CLICK), is a stretch of stalls (about 6 stalls) on the street. The stall is nameless but it's right at the end and has a yellow menu signboard.

The queue can usually be quite long.
The first time we lined up to take away chai kuih and tong sui, we lined up for easily half an hour.

Hanoi in a Summary

If you feel like taking a short trip to Hanoi,
below are just a couple of 'to-do' things in Hanoi.

1. Buying cheap paintings at Hang Trong (Perfect for those who want to decorate their house with paintings). Big paintings cost about USD80-USD100 (depending on design, art work, etc.). It's still relatively cheap nevertheless.

Also, please be reminded to haggle!
Cheap can become cheaper ;)

2. Touring the Old Quarter on a Trishaw.

BTW, most of the trishaws are rip offs (nothing new).

Would advise you to sit on a cab anytime because catching a cab is HALF the price. Would advise you to only take the trishaw to just experience touring around the old quarter. Never catch the trishaw to send you to specific destinations.

3. Eat in a 'touristy restaurant' facing the Hoan Kiem Lake @ Dinh Lang Thuy Ta Restaurant. Dinner set is about USD16 per person [depending on which set you choose actually].

Average tasting food served here such as spring rolls, salad, fried rice, fried fish, etc. but you'd get a lovely view of Hoan Kiem Lake at night.

A word of warning - You'll get performers dancing at your table, asking where are you from, trying to force sell you roses and . . .Hahahaha... Doesn't sound too enticing?

This is only if you feel like doing the 'tourist thing' (if you really want to feel like a tourist who has been ripped off). Don't ask me why did we even go there. We went with an American couple and Australian from our tour group.

4. Hoan Kiem Lake (it's just like your Lake Gardens in KL. Nothing much to see here. Just to chill out, pak tor, hold hands, etc.). If you're bored, you can pay 10,000 VND to enter into a mini temple (after crossing the bridge) although there's nothing much to see IMO.

Along the lake, there were so many couples POSING for wedding pics.

The above picture is hilarious though. Just check out how the groom is posing while sitting on the bride's dress with his shoe on it. Tsk tsk.

5. Drink Vietnamese coffee by the road side.

Plenty of places that sell coffee in the Old Quarter.
We paid about 20.000 VND a cup.
It was TOO bitter for me so I let Mike finish mine.
Anyways, I have never been a coffee person to begin with.

6. And how can ANYONE not eat this in Hanoi (unless you don't eat beef)? Beef pho!! Mmm mmm. I have no pho places to recommend. This was the pho served in the hotel we stayed in which wasn't too bad.

Every nook and corner sells pho though so chances are that you won't miss it!

7. Apart from the soup beef noodles, the Southern style beef noodles is very delicious too! Semi dry semi wet beef noodles with peanuts, bean sprouts, etc.

Restaurant - Bun Bo Nam Bo: 67 Hang Deur Street (Would recommend this place!)

8. Doing the Ninh Binh - Tam Coc tour. The tour packages offers pick up from hotels to and fro, lunch, and the tour entrance fee. It's a 2-and a half hour from the Old Quarter to this place.

The scenery is just amazing. The boat ride is so relaxing (You don't have to row the boat btw. Someone else will!). This tour also includes cycling. I cycled past the paddy fields and it was a wonderful experience!

This tour beats the Halong Bay tour hands down! If I had to pick just one tour to go to, I'd choose this tour anytime!

9. Halong Bay. Please google for more info *yawn*

Just so you know, there are PLENTY of tour agencies to book from once you are in Hanoi. Your hotel will be able to arrange the tour for you and it is BEST to haggle (once again) with them. I did my research and you can get one of these tours for USD25 per person.

However, we paid about USD35 per person for ONE tour as it's supposedly a 'deluxe' tour. For a premium, you'd probably get a smaller tour group, better boats, better van, better food, etc.

I checked with the other tourists on our tour and they paid even MORE than us (about USD46).

I suppose that the more expensive your hotel, the 'higher' the tour premium you'll have to pay (as the vans will pick people up from their hotels)....BUT to be fair, we had pretty good food on our boat and there were NINE of us to a WHOLE boat (the size of the boat is as per the picture).

Also, I'm very thrifty when it comes to tours and hotels. . . in a nutshell, I spend on things I shouldn't spend on and save on things I shouldn't save on. Tee hee.

10. Just walk around the Old Quarter and have fun exploring around!

BTW, the roads are SUPER confusing. Unless you have plenty of time to get lost, most of the time, actually, make that ALL the time, we used a cab to get around even though the destination was 5 minutes away because while walking halfway, we'd find ourselves losing our sense of direction....even with a MAP!

Plus, we didn't find the locals too friendly when asking for directions.

11. Kindly go to Trip Advisor for more suggestions :)

Green Tangerine, Hanoi

This was a totally last minute trip.

Purchased the flight tickets and booked the hotel
just a week before the trip.

We couldn't make up our mind
on whether to pay RM1k for return tickets
but in the end, with my "you-only-live-once-mentality"
just GO only lah!

This is actually my second trip to Hanoi with the first being about 5 years ago.
I did the whole touristy thing again - the Halong Bay and Tam Coc tour.
Anyways, Halong Bay and Tam Coc posts shall be saved for another day :)

Today's post is about a MUST EAT restaurant in Hanoi - Green Tangerine. CLICK.

When we reached the hotel,
I immediately told the hotel staff
to help me book a table at Green Tangerine!

I've actually emailed this restaurant like twice (kiasu me!)
before I flew over
but there wasn't any response!
Heard about this place from reading online reviews
and also from a colleague's recommendation.

I'll just let the pictures do the talking ;)

Stir fried beef and 'ca qua' fish in tamarind sauce

I ordered the set lunch from the French Menu while Mike had the Vietnamese set. He went on with his usual - WHO goes to Vietnam to eat French food yadi yada talk . . .

I was initially puzzled as to why the Vietnamese set costs 439.000 VND whilst the French lunch set was cheaper at 275.000 VND and asked the waitress.

Apparently, it's because the Vietnamese set has more food. However, in my opinion, I still think that the French set lunch is more worth it because how can spring rolls and pho justify the price! It's just a personal mental barrier I have to overcome! Lol.

Anyway both sets were very good.
I personally felt that it was worth every penny!
Expect to spend about RM50-RM60 per person.

Loved the fish lasagne.
It had three cubes of basil, parmesan and red fruit mousses on top of it. Found it pretty unique and more importantly, the flavours blended perfectly with the lasagne.

I would definitely head here again during my return trip to Hanoi.

Restoran Xan Ling, Segambut

One fine day, Mike ate a heavenly slab of pork
and could not stop raving about it
constantly telling me that
he wants to bring me there.

He made the pork sound SUPER good
but . . . one man's meat
is another man's poison.

Whenever somebody raves about a place,
my expectations will definitely increase.
I found the food was mah ma dei only
so perhaps, it was either a case of :

a) My expectations were just too much; or
b) The food was really mediocre; or
c) I generally have no taste in food; or
d) For the fact that I was starving and my gastric juices were working up and that we went ROUND AND ROUND (for about an hour) finding for this restaurant which is actually so damn easy to find so I ended up throwing a hissy fit and he got angry and yadi yada - my mood and appetite went *poof*

Maybe, it was (d). . . :P
But in all honesty, I found the food kinda salty.
Almost everything was salty!

I was addicted to the TOFU!
It was served piping hot, was pretty greasy and MSG laden.

Last Friday night,
we had a team dinner @ Bukit Tinggi BBQ.

I googled this restaurant
and to my surprise,
it's quite popular!

I have no idea how to get there AGAIN . .
but all I can remember is that
it's on the way to Genting
just that you don't go up all the way to Genting.
Directions. Fail.com.

Their distinctive interior design - upside down brollies. . .

. . . . and rows of empty wine bottles.

It was a rainy Friday night
and it was 9 p.m. by the time we reached
the restaurant
and were STARVING.

Hungry people can never write food reviews. . .

Hence, I'm from a hungry person's experience :)

I think that among all of the dishes we had that night -
the simplest of dishes
was the best among the lot -
fried egg on tofu!

MUST ORDER :)

But to drive all the way there to eat fried egg and tofu . . .

I think that most of us went *WHOAH* when the lamb was served.
Just look at those thick juicy slabs of meat per cut.

I found the meat a little overpowering in smell. . .very gamey. . .

It's roast chicken + salt baked chicken combo.

Nothing really special just that I found it fascinating
that the whole chicken was cooked differently on each half
without the chicken being cut.

Maybe I've been hiding under the coconut shell for too long.

The steamed black tilapia (hak fei chao yu) was pretty good.

We were heading out from the Sungai Besi + Pudu roundabout
(after finding out that the Lam Mee shop was closed that day)
when I noticed a row of charcoal stoves
lined outside a claypot chicken rice shop.

We turned back into the area
and decided to have our lunch there.

The charcoal stoves were too beautiful a sight to resist.
In fact, it got my appetite started -
I kept thinking of how great the
claypot rice would actually taste.

I think that my Chinese name
should have been Wai Sek. WAHAHAHA.

They actually serve a myriad of things
apart from Claypot chicken rice.
They have Chinese wine chicken, curry fish head, etc. as well.

Ordered a small pork stomach pepper soup to share.
Mike would have loved this.

Such a pity because the food here is great!

Went for lunch here with my team mates.
Would have never ever thought of eating here
because this area - Jln Kuchai Lama
is an uncharted territory for me.

Wasted - not because of drinking

Was contemplating between Japanese food
and Chinese food but my cravings
were skewed towards Chinese food that day,
hence to Overseas we went -
to celebrate my dad's birthday (and mine).

Dinner was good!
The food at Overseas hasn't failed us so far.

Super love the Four Seasons dish.
I could just eat that entire dish
as a meal for the night
and I'd be satisfied!

Ril's Steakhouse is a newly opened restaurant
located along Jalan Tun H.S. Lee.

Bought Groupons to dine at Ril's Steakhouse -
RM40 for a 350 gm steak and one side dish.
SUPER worth it - because 350 gms = a whole lotta steak.

In my opinion, one steak order
is enough for TWO people.

The menu states that 350 gms = ladies' size
but do not be deceived - unless you are a BIG eater.
Had to tapau my steak home. lol.

SUPER love the bread.

Lobster bisque - this was really good.
Rich with flavour.

Ril's tiga rasa scallops.

Prawn cocktail - on a bed of rocket and watercress.
The prawns were really fresh and this was oh-so-good.

Salad

Tuna tartare.

Baked potato mmMMm.
If I wasn't stuffed by the appetizers,
I would have finished this all by myself!

The appetizers are served in generous portions.
Good for sharing!

The steak doesn't look THAT big in this picture but it is!
It's really thick - we had a tough time cutting the steak
and chewing it.

The steak was cooked to perfection.
Most of us had ours medium done
while my mother had hers medium rare.

Despite this, we found the steak pretty tough to chew.
Perhaps, the thickness has something to do with it?!
Or perhaps, some tenderizing would have helped?
(unless it has ALREADY been tenderized...)

Creamy spinach as a side- fattening stuff!
Found it a little TOO creamy.
Was like a thick spinach broth.

The steak is served with garlic jus -
it's supposed to be their signature sauce.

I would have LOVED to order the sticky toffee pudding,
but I had the apple crumble instead

as I didn't want to wait for half an hour.

Ze apple crumble - delicious!

We were given complimentary ice-cream
because my mum complained about the ventilation.

Although I didn't feel it, the rest of my family were perspiring.
Was informed that they plan to install two ceiling fans
(in addition to their two air conditioners)
because the area which were were seated at
is far away from the air con.

Service was a little slow that night as well
because the restaurant was understaffed.

However, all-in-all,
with the Groupon voucher (I am a sucker for DISCOUNTS!)
and the yummy appetizers and dessert,
we were a little more forgiving (than usual).

Had I paid the FULL price for a meal,

my expectation would have changed ;)

Ambience invokes an easy breezy chilling feeling.

Watching ang mohs of all shapes and sizes tanning

Goody's is located along

It was recommended by Mike's friend

The pork ribs here is yummers!

We noticed a table beside us with 3 kids eating this - cheesy fries
and decided on ordering it too.
It was sinfully good!

I was taking pics of the food
when I noticed that the kids were looking at me
and started whispering.
They looked as though they were in 'serious discussion'.

My guess is that they thought
that I was taking a picture of them
because my camera was facing them
when I was actually focusing on the food.

Along Jalan Oberoi in Seminyak
are rows and rows of restaurants to choose from.

We headed to Ultimo
after reading good reviews on Trip Advisor. CLICK.

Ultimo is said to serve good Italian food and value for money meals.
For the ang mohs, almost EVERY meal in Bali
is value for money for them -
because of their strong currency.
But for us Malaysians, it's considered as pricey.

I can't recall how much was our bill was
but just expect to pay about RM50 per person for a main meal.

We were seated outside so it was rather hot
and we were welcomed by many mosquitoes.
Couldn't really see my food either because it was dark!

The food wasn't spectacular.
It was just alright for me.

However, the chocolate cake is worth a mention.
I have never tried a bad chocolate lava cake before though.

Ultimo's choc lava cake is YUMMY! :)
Enjoyed the dessert more than my main meal.

Bakso

We spent about 3 hours in Bali Galeria, a shopping mall in Bali.
Decided to skip beach hopping (which was the intended tour for the day)
due to the crazy scorching heat!

Noticed alot of people eating @ Kafe Betawi so we decided to give it a go.
There was even a review done by Wall Street Journal on this
which we noted in the menu.

I ordered the Bakso because after seeing hundreds of bakso stalls around Bali -
how can I not try it out?!

At least now that I have tried Bakso, I know that I will never try it again (to be fair, I will not eat the Bakso at Kafe Betawi). It just didn't taste palatable at all.

The other food + drinks weren't that great as well...plus portions are super small.

While in Seminyak, we didn't know where to eat
so I started googling for babi/bebek restaurants
and this blog popped up recommending Warung Eropa. CLICK.

Was glad that we went there
because the crispy duck here is really good.
Crispy on the outside yet the texture of the meat inside is tender.

Mike wanted to drink soup so he ordered a tom yum soup.
Tasted authentic. Was rather spicy.

The amazing bebek. I couldn't stop pinching Mike's meal.

My meal wasn't too bad either. Mashed potato and pork ribs.
I was craving for pork ribs after having really good pork ribs @ Kuta.

You won't regret it!

A meal is never complete without dessert.

Funny how paddy fields can also be a tourist attraction.

How come nobody goes to Kedah to see paddy fields?!

We were seated upstairs and could look down at the paddy fields.

The day before we headed to Bebek Bengil,
I was thinking about whether
I should order the smoked duck in advance
since many blogs I read recommended the smoked duck.

I didn't end up calling because I felt as though I was already overeating in Bali on my first day there. . . but while we were there, I just tried my luck and asked for the smoked duck even though it clearly states on the menu that it has to be ordered a day in advance.

We were lucky that day ;)
They had an extra smoked duck (it was the last one as well).

Bebek fate.

The set comes with satay, vege, rice and the smoked duck (just right for 2 people).

The satay is superbly good -from the lean chunky meat to the satay sauce topped with fried shallots.

The famous Balinese smoked duck!
Haven't tasted anything like it before.

The meat slides off from the bones and it has some herbal taste (which I can't describe) *lousy me*

Worth a try. But do eat it when it's hot!
I was so busy snapping pics til the food turned a lil cold. LOL.

Visiting this place was
at the TOP of my check list.

Have heard SO much about the Babi Guling
and the reviews I heard were so mixed -
It's either you'll love it
or you'll hate it.

I was told not to get my hopes up high
but the verdict after tasting it -
I....LOVED IT!

The cripsy pork was really yums.
The pork was tender and lean
while ze crispy pork skin = thumbs up.

I scraped off the fats behind the crispy pork skin though.

Ate everything except for the intestine (urghhh).
Was told by our Bali driver that the intestine
is cooked with flour, blood and coconut.

Pretty decent hotel with monkeys

Breakfast time is the most hilarious time.

Monkeys creeping up at every corner
with hotel staff running around
chasing them with sticks
as the monkeys try to grab food off the table.

Such a comical sight!

My friend told me that I HAVE to try out Minami when we went to Bali.
It's the top 2nd restaurant in Ubud rated on Trip Advisor. CLICK.

We got the help of our hotel staff to call up the restaurant to make a booking for us (just in case it's packed).

Initially, Mike kept on saying "Who goes to Bali to eat Japanese?" or
"Nobody goes to Bali to eat expensive food...."

Yadi yada yadi yada.

Takkan I'm gonna eat Balinese food for 7 days straight right?

Anyways, a meal in Minami would cost about RM70 per person.
However, I ordered a special dinner set (which was a lil more pricey).

My dinner took awhile to serve
because my set meal has multiple dishes
(ie appetizer, soup with noodles, raw fish, grilled salmon, etc.)
served in intervals.

Apart from the wonderful dinner we had
and being enthralled by the beautiful setting (go see for youself!),
the great thing about Minami is that
they are spot on on their service!

Mike got to enjoy alot of complimentary meals like soup, appetizers, dessert, etc
because of the timing gap of our meals.

Mike ordered a teppanyaki set which would have been served at one go.

They really paid alot of attention into ensuring
that there wouldn't be a moment where
one of us had a meal
while the other had to wait.

If you're there, do order the beef tataki.
Tender and tasty goodness accompanied with the Ponzu sauce.

I had a wonderful time in Bali
and my Bali trip is probably my last holiday for 2011.

Cafe Wayan & Bakery, Ubud

We checked into our hotel in Ubud upon our arrival.

Stayed at Champlung Sari Hotel -
located right beside the famous Ubud Monkey Forest.

Since we didn't have any plans for the day,
we took a stroll outside our hotel
and searched for Cafe Wayan
as it was recommended by our Bali driver.

It was a 10 minutes walk from our hotel.

We should have tried out the cakes because they're pretty popular apparently.
We only got to know of it when our driver came to pick us up the next day.

The cafe is HUGE! It stretches all the way inside -
surrounded by ponds and plants.
The garden is beautiful.
Loved the landscape!

We took quite awhile before deciding on WHERE to sit -
there were just so many areas and corners to choose from.

We decided to sit on the floor.

As we browsed through the menu,
we just HAD to order an Indonesian meal - nasi goreng :)
We're in Bali after all!

Mike's seafood fried rice. Rp.50.000.
Preferred it much more than the fried rice which I ordered.

My Nasi Goreng chicken which came with chicken (d-uh), balinese chicken satay, a corn fritter and fried egg. Rp.75.000.

I had a hard time converting the Rp. to RM initially because of the multiple zeros but after awhile I got the hang of it.

The only thing which we couldn't stand about this place was the FLIES.
Initially, there were none at all but the moment
our food was served, a swarm of flies
came out of nowhere
irritating the hell out of us. . . .

. . . so just imagine us eating with one hand
while using the other hand to constantly SHOO
the flies away!

If I can recall clearly, Chinese tea was 6 Euros PER HEAD.
OUCH!

Miniscule portions - 10-12 Euros per meal.
My beef noodles was served in a bowl
which was just slightly bigger than the size of your average rice bowl.
5 spoonfuls and I finished my lunch.

Most expensive Chinese meal we ever had -
50 painful Euros.

This just shows how we are unable to live without Chinese food . . .
not even for a week.

Saint Michel, located in the Latin Quarters
is a wine and dine haven -
not fancy dining though
but there are rows and rows of restaurants
to choose from.

Imagine restaurant staff
standing by the side walk
outside the restaurant
ushering and prompting you to dine in their restaurant
while guaranteeing your money back
if the food isn't up to expectation -
that's how competitive it is!

'Traditional French Cooking' - I am not sure how traditional French cooking is actually supposed to taste like . . .

We had a set dinner (3 course meal!) for 15 Euros :)
Pretty cheap for Europe standards
because in Rome, Florence and Venice (the worst in terms of rip off prices!),
prices are cut throat - 10 Euros for one main course.

Brasserie Balzar was recommended by a local. CLICK.

The place was brimming with people and filled with chatter.

Space was pretty limited and dinner there
doesn't have a very personal setting to it because
we were seated so close to others.

On our right was a couple from the States.

They mentioned that they've dined at Brasserie Balzar
a couple of times before and keep going back
because the food is superb.

Good news for us.

Service here was great. Very professional and warm waiters.
We really enjoyed our meal although the snails lacked taste.

They should have turned the dumplings the other way round instead.
PLUS, don't they have a bigger plate?
What happened to basic common sense?

As I was eating the noodles, I chewed and chewed away
at something thinking that it was leek
(coz leek is hard to chew and there seems to be leek in the soup) lol. . .

Sensing something not right,
I spat it out and saw that it was PLASTIC!
P-tui!!!

Told the cashier at the counter about it
but she didn't even apologize.
Heck, she didn't even say anything.
Unless, she didn't understand English.

Lousy customer service.

RM90 bucks - for 2 bowls of noodles, 2 cups of green tea and dumplings.
RM4 bucks for green tea per person. Hmmm.
A big bowl of noodles for RM36?
Plus, it's JUST char siew in the noodles.

Told Mike that we should have eaten at Tonkatsu instead -
it's much better value for money.

Don't think we'd re-visit this place anytime soon.

Got off work rather late one day
was tired and hungry.

It was around 9-ish p.m.
and choices were rather limited.
Was thinking of eating pan mee in Uptown
but Mike asked whether I wanted to try something else -
Bone & Pot, which is
located about 2 shops
beside the pan mee shop.

Saw the opening hours of Bone & Pot -
they close at 1 a.m.!
I was relieved because I hate having to
rush through my meal.

We ordered the signature pork bone broth and pepper pork broth.
I liked both of the broths!

It was a rather cold that night and having a steamboat on a cold day = syok!

Decided on ordering mini chicken bites.
It was full of cartilage.

Love love LOVE the assortments of chillies/pastes.

Super stim.

On average, one order (ie. 4 pork balls, sotong balls) costs about RM7-8 per plate.
Not exactly cheap. Our bill was about RM100 for the both of us.

But ambience wise, it's nice to dine in a clean air conditioned restaurant while having steamboat for a change instead of having the usual roadside steamboat.

My dog had a treat that night too! I took back the bone for him! I'm serious! LOL.

Pao Xiang Bah Kut Teh

We had Meng Kee char siew in mind
but the char siew was all sold out at 12 p.m.!!!
It was a sad day.

Not knowing what to eat in Glenmarie,
we decided on Pao Xiang BKT
which was nearby.

Not really knowing what to expect,
the BKT here is served in tiny bowls.

I'm so used to eating BKT from a claypot
with the soup served steaming hot
so this was a major contrast.

The soup was served lukewarm.
Portions aren't that big.
And the BKT here is pricey (of which everybody knows!)

The soup wasn't too bad
but price wise - I didn't feel as if our meal was worth the price.
It was about RM60+ for the both of us.

Plus, when we asked for a soup refill,
they were pretty KIAM SIAP -
bringing out a small rice bowl of soup
pouring half into Mike's bowl
and half into mine.

Went to my favourite mall over the weekend
and decided on checking out Tokyo Street.

There's only a handful Japanese shops - Daiso, etc
and Japanese restaurants.

We decided on having the buffet steamboat @ Suki-ya.
FREE flow of meat ok - chicken, lamb and beef!
Plus, there's quite a variety of vegetables to pick from.
I almost OD'ed on the mushrooms.

KAM CHAM KU my favourite!

Ze manual - telling of what sauces they have (ponzu, sesame and fermented bean), how to cook it, etc., yadi yada.

I chose the Sukiyaki soup base while my mum opted for a seaweed soup base (rather plain tasting though). They also have a kimchi soup base available.

Free flow of soft serve too (with toppings to pick from).
Was so glad they had dessert.

After eating something hot and soupy,
the ice-cream was a good finishing touch to our meal.

The buffet costs about RM28++ (if I can recall clearly).
Pretty worth it if you're a big eater.

It was a quiet Friday night spent with Mike + Louis on Mike's Bday.
I was the lamp post for the night. Tsk tsk.

Undecided on where to eat, Louis suggested Le Midi.

Love the pastel purple hues.
It makes the setting so dreamy.

It was an intimate dining session with Mike + Louis.
Chatting over our usual 'topics-of-those-in-their-twenties'
ie. of properties, politics, wages and careers.

The bread was really good.
Couldn't help myself from having 2 rounds of bread :)

Each of us had the degustation 3 set menu each - value for money!

Main lobster cream soup with parsley foam

Escargot a la Bourguignonne,with garlic and butter

Tuscany grain fed prime rib,served with rocket salad and parmesan

The steak was really good.

Italian tiramisu

The food was pretty good.
We had a pretty satisfying meal.

By the time the tiramisu was served,
I was so stuffed thanks to the bread.

Louis commented that the tiramisu cake @ Le Midi was even better than Alexis' cake. Pffffft. Cannot be compared okay! Tiramisu fusion and authentic tiramisu cake are both on a different scale

Stinging bacon - coated with wasabi.
Too spicy for my liking.
I can never eat wasabi!

Wasabi lovers would probably enjoy this though.

Decided to try out something different for once.

I've been eating prawn mee during my last few visits to Champ's
and the last prawn mee I had tainted my impression of it.
The prawns were not fresh. BLEAH.
One bite and I couldn't eat the rest.

Ordered the chicken chop and it was SO-SO only.
Didn't enjoy my meal. The sauce wasn't very tasty.

The prawn mee which Mike had was good this time around.
Prawns were gigantic and fresh!
Regretted that I didn't order it.

Would highly recommend those of you who are fans of Prada to head there.

I was running all over the place.
It was like a playground for (Asian girls).
Seriously.

holding on to my number tightly (we have to take tickets btw).

I spotted the wallets and told myself

Made a mad dash to the small leather goods
once the doors opened
because small leather goods are
often the first to go.

How cheap is cheap?
Well, my most overly repeated line - cheap is relative.

You can get a canvas bag for about RM800
and a pure leather bag for about RM2000+.
WORTH it or not?

I'm GLAD that we headed there.
The journey was well worth it.

We decided on this restaurant because we saw locals dining there.
Being a tourist, the easiest way to avoid falling into a tourist trap,
just go where the locals go :)

The basket of bread which I've been talking about.

I peered at another table just watching an Italian eat almost the whole basket of bread all by himself and was amazed at his appetite for bread.

He even had the whole full course - primi, secondi and dessert thereafter.

I just HAD to try out the risotto . . .
the risotto had a very, very strong seafood broth to it.
It was pretty good.

The seafood pasta used the same broth as my risotto so it tasted pretty much the same - just that it's spaghetti.

You guys must be pretty sick about seeing pictures of pasta all the time!
Just imagine how we ate pasta almost every day in Italy to the extent that we needed some dosage of Chinese food in Italy (of which we had and it tasted heavenly!).

The weather in Florence was dark and gloomy.
The darks clouds hovered over us
and was waiting to pour.

Having no inkling of what to eat
and tired of browsing around on Trip Advisor
searching for places to eat,
we stopped outside a hotel
and asked the bell boy for recommendations.

We laid down our criteria - cheap & good (Super Asian) :P

"Nuti", he said and guided us accordingly.

We rushed to get to Nuti before the rain started pouring buckets.

While the pastas were rather ordinary, the pizzas were rather good!
As you can see above, the pastas look pretty plain and simple.

I remember sms-ing Mike to tell him how I've eaten enough of pizza in Italy to satiate my cravings for the entire year.

Like, finally! A restaurant which serves decent Italian food.
Caffe Leonardo is located near the Spanish Steps,
which was near where we stayed.

Too many disappointing Italian meals during our trip but we had a rather enjoyable meal in this restaurant.

The Caesar Salad was really good.
Very generous with the parmesan shavings.

Capricciosa pizza ! Loved this pizza.

It has tomato, mozzarella, eggs, ham, olives, artichokes and mushroom.
It was so good.
Plus, the portion was just right for sharing.

My bro and I had a pork loin with mashed potatoes each.
Juicy tender flavorful pork. Would recommend this!

Seafood pasta - can't recall how this tasted.

Service here was good. Attentive waiters and waitresses.
Price wise - it was value for money! Because it's a rare occasion for us to leave feeling contented after a meal in Rome! Price is a function of satisfaction.
Location wise -it's really easy to find.

Also, bread here is COMPLIMENTARY.
A rare find.

We didn't want the bread (because throughout our trip, we had to pay for the bread in almost every Italian restaurant we went to and none of us like the bread) but the waiter insisted that we take the bread and mentioned that it's free.

We didn't end up touching the bread at all though because
the caesar salad came with slices of bread as well.

La Terazza, Florence

La Terazza was recommended to us by a local Italian.
She said that the food there is not bad
but the view there is just beautiful.

Gotta trust the locals!

La Terraza overlooks the Cathedral dome and Pensione Pendini.
The view was fantastic!
If only I had an SLR! Such a waste.

Although it doesn't look appetizing, it was good!

Decided on eating here after reading reviews on Trip Advisor. CLICK.

Meals in Europe are really REALLY pricey.
The price of an average meal alone (without water) is 10 Euros.
And the food at that price range, tends to be very mediocre tasting.

Ristorante Alla Rampa is located near the Spanish Steps and is really easy to find.

Bread is served at every Italian restaurant as a starter. . .
and most restaurants charge for it.
The bread isn't freshly baked bread but
manufactured bread sticks and toast.

I really didn't like it one bit.
It doesn't come with butter as well.
Dry crusty bread.

We asked for butter (to eat with our bread) thinking that it was complimentary.
It cost us 4 Euros.
That's like RM16 for the measly butter serving as pictured above.

HEART PAIN or NOT? You tell me.
We also fell into a tourist trap in Florence
and ordered a 10 Euro ice-cream each.
Painful memories indeed.

Saw lots of people ordering this dish. My mum and bro had this.
Seabass with potatoes and tomatoes.

The waiters in Ristorante Alla Rampa wear a white suit and a bow tie.
It gives this restaurant an 'expensive' image. . .
but based on local standards, it's not expensive.

Food here costs an average about 20 Euros a meal. . .
which I found VERY costly for what I had.

I had a salmon pasta and was expecting . . .
MORE SALMON than this.

I can't even see the salmon. . .

This is how a typical Italian pasta looks like.

Now that I know what to expect,
I won't get disappointed the next time.

The pasta in Italy seems to be all about minimalism. . .or perhaps, it's just me who always overeats and always wants BIG and generous portions of EVERYTHING.

Located along Via Della Croce (Beside Hotel Panda) is an amazing bakery.
Freshly baked pastries which are superbly good.
The croissants are to die for.
Chocolate croissant. Custard croissant.

One of the more enjoyable meals in Italy.
Apparently, my Malaysian taste buds are not accustomed to authentic Italian food (namely the pastas). . . but even the Italian food in Melbourne tastes better!

The weather was perfect. Sunny skies. Way better than the weather we experienced in Florence and Venice where it rained and rained and rained. Le sigh.

Three days in Rome definitely isn't enough but hopping on the convenient Open Tour buses made sightseeing an ultimate breeze (for those of us who do not have the luxury of taking long leave). You get to hop on and off the bus at all the popular tourist hot spots.

Rome was definitely love at first sight for me.

We had to wait for some time for our meal to arrive that night - 40 minutes.
We reached at 9 p.m. and were surprised that there were lotsa people eating at that hour (more than lunch hours and early dinner hours).

The usual 3 orders at Fatty Crab -
MUST order deep fried chicken wings

and obviously, fatty crabs.

I was telling Mike that the first time I ate in Fatty Crab was with an 'online friend'. Those were the days my friend.

Anyways, recently Mike has been checking in at every restaurant
using some Iphone app.

The awkward thing about 'checking in' is that you can see who else has checked in the same place and possibly at the same time! There was a girl right beside our table who checked in while we were at Fatty Crab!

TECHNOLOGY is so amazing!
Soon, dating stories will become more exciting . . .

"We 'checked in' at the same place."

Made Teriyaki sauce.
Mixed sweet soya sauce, rice wine, parsley, spring onions, onion, salt and pepper to make the sauce.

I might have to stay away from salmon for awhile.
Super jelak man . . . .

Amazing Pork Katsudon

Love at first sight and love at first bite.

Ordered the SPECIAL katsudon (comes with a super nice potato! Semi-creamy battered chunks in the shape of an egg. Soooo good). The pork cutlets were extremely generous in portions! The bowl is quite big too!

I love EVERYTHING about this meal - the pickles the egg the mayo the pork cutlets the potato the rice the sauce ! I'm a die hard katsudon fan ;)

Crazy with the cinnamon sugar.
Granny Smith apples I used two.
The apples after baking
were amazingly soft to chew
while crunchy pecans
I put too few.

A little burnt at the edges
five minutes a little too late.
Burnt bits, I too ate
with a dollop of ice cream.
No wonder I can never be thin.
